Duties and Qualifications

Duties and Responsibilities

The Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Tennessee State University is a senior executive position reporting to the University President having duties and responsibilities including but not limited to the following:

• Partners with the President in promoting and articulating the mission of the University to students, faculty, constituents, and other stakeholders;
• Serves as a member of the President’s Leadership Council;
• Articulates the long-term vision and strategic plan of the University in guiding the Division of Academic Affairs;
• Provides leadership, oversight, and direction for the following entities: eight colleges and one school; Institutional Effectiveness; Planning and Assessment; Research and Sponsored Programs; University Honors Program; Extended Education; Office of Records; University Library; Cooperative Extension; Agricultural Research Program; Centers for Testing, Academic Enrichment and Support; and Enrollment Management.
• Works closely with internal and external constituents to promote and validate academic quality and the achievement of strategic outcomes;
• Identifies, allocates, and prudently manages the budgetary resources of the Division of Academic Affairs that support the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the University;
• Promotes and actively encourages faculty development, research, and scholarship;
• Provides leadership in institutional efforts to improve retention rates, graduation rates, and student learning outcomes;
• Stays abreast of evolving trends and issues in higher education and effectively translates their relevance to deans and faculty who must address them; and
• Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess an earned doctorate or the equivalent terminal degree, a record of teaching, research, and service to qualify for the rank of a tenured professor. The successful candidate should have acquired progressive experiences in higher education leadership or administration in critical areas such as academic planning and budgeting, program development, program assessment, accreditation, institutional effectiveness, and distance education activities.
